What is indexing?

Indexing is a process, when VistaGlance obtains information about files and folders in your system. It is very important for VistaGlance to have the latest information about your file system. In this case, VistaGlance will find exactly what you need. VistaGlance uses several indexing techniques. Here they are:

Automatic indexing
Background reindexing
Manual indexing
Removable drives indexing

If your operating system is Windows 98/ME please look through Windows 98/ME issues section.

In Pro version of VistaGlance you can tell program not to index all system drives but only appointed drives and folders. You can also index archives and remote (network) drives.

Automatic indexing

Normally, when you perform some changes in the file system (copy, move, delete or rename files and folders), VistaGlance recognizes this fact in a trice. Therefore, you can query newly added or modified files or folders and the program will show them.

Background reindexing

Theoretically, Automatic indexing feature catches all changes in the file system in the moment they happen. However, if VistaGlance is not run, it cannot use automatic indexing. For this purpose, VistaGlance reindexes you hard disk in background from time to time. A default period of such reindexing is one week. Normally, you may not even notice that VistaGlance reindexes your hard disk because it performs this operation silently. You can use VistaGlance during such reindexing as usual.

For advanced users only:
You can change the period of background reindexing in options.ini file in the default installation folder of VistaGlance. The necessary parameter is named “ReindexingDaysDelta” and is measured in days. Please, do not set zero there, because this value is reserved for internal use.

Manual indexing and Indexing Wizard

VistaGlance automatically shows Indexing Wizard at the first run. When it has indexed your hard disk, you need not run it again anymore. However, in some cases (change of hard disk, problems with database, etc.) you may want VistaGlance to reindex all your hard disks once again. You can do this from VistaGlance’s main menu. To make VistaGlance reindex all your hard disks select Options->Reindex Now item from VistaGlance’s main menu.

Please, note that Indexing Wizard can appear once upon a time during normal work of VistaGlance. That means that index database was corrupted and needs to be repaired. Please, let VistaGlance finish reindexing in this case.

In Pro version of VistaGlance you can tell program not to index all system drives but only appointed drives and folders. You can also index archives and remote (network) drives.

Removable drives indexing

By default, VistaGlance automatically indexes removable drives (CD/DVD disks, USB-drives, etc.) when you insert them and “forgets” this information when you remove them. Such indexing is rather quick (usually not more than several seconds) and is performed in background. However, you can turn this feature off from the VistaGlance's Troubleshooting menu.

To disable indexing of removable drives check Options->Troubleshooting-> Disable Work with Removable Disks and Drives item. To enable indexing of removable drives uncheck it.

Windows 98/ME issues

In Windows 98/ME, automatic indexing is impossible. To compensate this fact VistaGlance sets the period of Background reindexing to one day. However, if you need the actual results, you should use Manual indexing before such search.
